Dear Parents/Carers,
Belatedly, I sincerely hope that you and your families had a restful and enjoyable Easter break.
The last term of this academic year is already well underway and it promises to be as busy and eventful as ever. Do therefore make reference to the school website for all of the key dates of things that will be happening throughout the summer term.
NEU Strikes
Again, I regret that we have had to close our school again to the vast majority of classes this week. This is also the case this coming Tuesday, 2nd May, although school will be open for Y6 who have their SATs the following week. The school office will keep you informed about last minute changes should they arise. Together with the suite of Bank Holidays throughout May makes for a rather disjointed first half-term. Hopefully however, business as usual will resume in time.
SATs at St Mary’s
Our Year 6 children will be undertaking their end of key stage SATs tests from 9th – 12th May. They have worked so very hard in all areas and we have no doubt that they will apply themselves brilliantly and do very well. We are ever keen to stress to our children that SATs are merely designed to help assess where children are in their learning in the core subject areas of reading, maths and writing and that they serve to help their future teachers determine what they will need to do to further support them with their learning at secondary school.
Our Year 2 children will also be undertaking SATs assessments within the next few weeks. 2023 will be the last year that Year 2 children will be required to undertake these statutory assessments. As with Year 6, we have every confidence that Year 2 children will do equally well.
I am sure you are share the appreciation that I have for all school staff who continually go the extra-mile to ensure that your children are so very well supported and prepared for these assessments.
URGENT: PSA – More Support Needed
This is a plea to all parents to please help support the Parent and School Association (PSA) in whatever way you can to help provide additional fun and creative activities for your child and for the school community at large. The PSA also helps to fundraise for these activities by holding events like the school discos, cake sales and the Christmas and summer fairs. As the summer fair is fast approaching, the PSA is therefore calling out to all parents to lend a hand. This could be by helping to plan a game during the day, running a stall for an hour or two or simply galvanising additional support amongst the parent community to help on the day itself. This event is a truly special day in the life of our school and we really need you to help make it a huge success. Thank you.
In amongst the busyness of continually teaching, learning and assessing all children, we remain ever-committed to ensuring that there are lots of additional fun and creative extra-curricular activities that will keep us ever-focused and entertained, be this…
- The King’s Coronation Tea Party on the afternoon of Friday 5th May
- PSA Cake Sales on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th May
- International Evening on Tuesday 16th May – see below for how to get involved
- Maths Stay & Play Event on Tuesday 23rd May
- Year 5 Pars Trip on Wednesday 24th May
- Gymnastic, athletics, crocket and cycling events this half-term
- Range of other class-based trips and visits
- Commemorating and celebrating special event days such as Stephen Lawrence Day and Christian Aid Day
….and that’s just this half-term!
Do have a lovely Bank Holiday weekend,
Calvin Henry
