Dear Parents & Carers,
Welcome back everyone – it’s hard to believe that the end of the school year is racing towards us again but we still have so much to do and lots to fit in. It’s a really busy half term so please keep an eye on the important dates and make a note of them.
Happy 175th Birthday St Mary’s CE Primary School!
We were very excited recently when we found out that our school was 175 years old, and not the 160 years we had previously thought. Mr Beardwell has been doing some research and the Hornsey Historical Society unearthed information that shows there was a school with our name 175 years ago. With such a monumental milestone, we will be transforming our Rectory Gardens hall into an art gallery to show off some of the incredible artworks that the children have been creating as they have been learning about the history of our school and Hornsey. Please come along and join in the celebrations on Tuesday 18th June from 5pm to 7pm. We hope to have some special guests along to join in the party.
French at St Mary’s
Continuing our theme of celebrating our specialist subjects, in this newsletter we shine a light on French. Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) are an important feature at St Mary’s. While Ms Abernethy teaches French lesson at Church Lane, when children arrive at Rectory Gardens, they are taught by our MFL teacher, Mme Williamson, who has been at the school for nearly two years. Throughout this time, Mme Williamson has continued to make French lessons enjoyable, fun and highly useful. This week alone, Year 5 children travelled to Paris for the day on Eurostar, where they visited famous landmarks, enjoyed a boat trip along the River Seine and used the some of the language they have learnt to order some French crepes. Having lived in Paris previously, Madame Williamson brings a level of enthusiasm to her role which ensures the children have the wonderful opportunities to learn French. Have a look at the pictures of the Paris trip in the link below.
Reception Open Evening
An important event in our calendar this term is welcoming our new Reception parents along to our Open Evening on Wednesday 12th June from 6pm-8pm. We hope to see you all there to complete your forms and find out information that will help your children settle in in September.
Year 6 Transition
Each year, we support our year 6 children before they make the transition from primary to secondary school. As with previous years, our children take part in the 6-week ‘Live Your Dreams’ programme run by Behaviour Consultant, Tracey Campbell. The successful programme highlights expectations for next year and challenges the children to think about how they will choose to flourish going forward. Tracey has been involved with St Mary’s for the last three years and is highly skilled in motivating our children.
Hong Kong Students Visit Y3 and Y4
We had some special visitors in school who have come from City University of Hong Kong. They spent the afternoon with the children playing games and doing craft activities including lantern making, origami animals and bookmarks as well as a chopstick masterclass. See below for some photos of this special opportunity, organised by an ex-parent.
Summer Term Trips
Instead of our usual whole school outing, each year group has planned a lovely day out. These have been heavily subsidised by the PSA so thank you very much to them.
Support for PSA – Summer Fair is fast approaching, Saturday 29th June 12-3pm
The Summer Fair is rapidly approaching and the PSA team are busily preparing what we are sure will be a great day, filled with lots of fun activities to take part in with food to enjoy, drinks in the sunshine with our lovely school community. More information will be sent out soon about how you can get involved and the PSA will need all hands on deck to support this so please make yourself available for even just an hour on the day itself.
Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the sunshine,
Jane O’Brien
