Dear Parents and Carers,
What wonderful weather we are having this week. The sun certainly makes a difference to our moods, and has been perfect for the trips and events that have taken place this week. Let’s hope this weather remains with us for the rest of the summer term and beyond, into the holidays.
Parent Governor
We received one nomination for parent governor and welcome Adam Cortazzo, parent of Zoe in Year 5 to the St Mary’s team.
175th Birthday Celebrations
Thank you to everyone who attended St Mary’s 175th birthday exhibition this week. It was a fabulous event that show-cased the history of the school and the local area, but also the talented artists we have across the school. We had some VIPs attend the event who were impressed by the quality of the art work created by each class, and also with Ms Lincoln, our art teacher, and in the Church Lane and Rectory Gardens art clubs. Many people found themselves or other family members in the school archives of photographs and log books, which was great to see, and we all enjoyed taking a walk down Hornsey High Street, created by our Reception classes. You can see more here 175 Art Exhibition or visit our Instagram page @stmarysschooln8. Continuing our celebrations, both sites came together today in the churchyard for a celebration picnic. We played games, danced and ate birthday cake. Father Bruce gave a blessing which made it a very special occasion.
Book Amnesty
Please can you have a look at home for any books that belong to school and send them back in as soon as possible. We know that books often get put on a bookshelf or lost in children’s bedrooms. Books are an expensive resource so please help us to find all the ones that have gone missing across the school year. This doesn’t include the current book that children are reading, they can keep these until the end of term. Children will be rewarded with raffle tickets for books that they return.
School Athletics Champions
It has been another successful year for our St Mary’s athletes. Last week the children attended the Haringey Athletics Championships where they made us all very proud. The girls won the gold medal and the boys won a silver medal, making us one and two in Haringey. I can see some future Olympians in our midst. You can see a round-up of the sporting events so far here Sporting Events Summer 2
Art at St Mary’s
If you attended the exhibition this week you would have seen the quality of the art work the children are producing at St Mary’s using different mediums and techniques. Art is growing from strength to strength with the support of our art teacher, Ms Lincoln. All children across the school have the opportunity to be taught by Ms Lincoln and some also join her for art club and art therapy. We know that art is a way of expressing yourself and that this in turn improves our wellbeing. We also know that this world needs creative people to entertain, challenge our thinking and to make us smile, so giving this opportunity to the children is something we are very proud of and not something that every school is able to offer.
Year 5 Paris Trip Assembly
I am sure, like me, you were very impressed with the skills that the children have gained in French so far, during their time at St Mary’s. It looked like a wonderful trip, where they experienced many new things like the Eurostar, the Eiffel Tower and crepes! The children showed great maturity travelling to another country and taking in the culture, which is amazing. Thank you to all of the parents for getting your children prepared and to the station, the staff who supported, and to Mademoiselle Williamson for leading the organisation.
Busy, Busy, Busy!
As we near the end of term we have many events. Please can you ensure you put the important dates in the diary. For example Saturday 29th June is the school Summer Fair and Wednesday 3rd July is the whole school open evening. Thanks to the PSA, who have supported with funding, each class also has trips to celebrate the end of the school year. These include trips to Go Ape, the London Aquarium and the Science Museum, London Zoo and Tottenham Hotspur Statium.
Wishing you all a great weekend and enjoy the sunshine,
Jane O’Brien
