Spring 2 Sporting Round-Up – to end March 2023
Cycling League – Round 3! (Last day of spring 1)
We’re half way through our cycling league and the competition is close! Round 3 (10th Feb) was another close affair with our cyclists achieving some great finishing places – Zahara, Amelia and Rueben had great wins and everyone in the team contributed to our points tally! On to round 4 next month and hopefully up the league! Well done all!

Tottenham Hotspur Girls Football Cup (Last day of spring 1)
On the 10th Feb our Girls team entered the TH girls football cup. In our first game against a very strong Rhodes Avenue side we were desperately unlucky as they scored the winner with the last kick of the game! Our luck sadly didn’t get much better in a day of near misses – hitting the post twice and lots of close games! Overall we ended up with 6 points (3 draws, 1 win, 3 losses) and this wasn’t quite enough to qualify. I thought we performed really well on the day and showed how much we have improved this year – we just needed a little luck on the day which deserted us! We’ll be back stronger at the next one. Well done girls!

Tottenham Hotspur Boys Football Cup
On 24th February it was our boys turn at the Spurs Football Cup. In our first game we were desperately unlucky to win against Harris Academy as Triston hit the cross bar and their keeper made some great saves. Drawing that game 0-0 we needed to then to win our next games to go qualify but could only draw and lose so it was a rare early exit for us! We played some friendlies after winning 2 games and playing some good football but it wasn’t quite our day. Back to training for us!

Rain Stopped Play – Cycling Round 4 and Hockey Postponed
With such unpredictable weather this half term, sadly the hockey and cycling competitions were postponed. Hopefully they’ll be re-organised for summer term!
Haringey Basketball Competition
On Friday 24th March we participated in the Haringey Basketball Tournament. Due to Covid and a calendar clash last year we hadn’t been to this event in 5 years so was great to be back! We started strongly winning our first game 6-0 with Lottie scoring two great jump shots and Julian adding a 3rd. We went on to win 3 of our first 4 games beating Belmont, North Haringey and Highgate Primary! We finished top of our group and qualified for the final group. In the afternoon we won our first game beating South Haringey as Julian and Armani scored two excellent lay ups. Unfortunately, we couldn’t quite reach the final as we lost to Coldfall and Harris Academy in our final games. It was a superb effort from this team who’ve been training hard at basketball club and showed great team spirit and skill throughout! Well done all!

Basketball at Church Lane
We’ve invested in two new basketball hoops at CL as we try to develop the sport with our youngest children. The children have been having a great time developing their dribbling and passing skills as well as their shooting!
Highgate Tennis Club at Church Lane
Highgate Tennis Club came to Church Lane to work with some of the children to give them free tennis taster sessions. The children were very enthusiastic and really enjoyed learning some of the basic skills for tennis. Thank you Highgate Tennis Club – that was lots of fun.
Historic celebration of women’s football at Alexandra Palace
On Sunday 26th March we turned up to this historic event at Alley Pally only to find out the school event had been cancelled last minute! However, we didn’t let a bit of mud ruin our fun as we organised an impromptu game with our year 5-6 football team as well as girls from other local schools including siblings and parents! After a fun, muddy kick about some stayed to watch the re-enactment of the first ladies professional game in 1895, as a North and South team donned traditional kit for this special game.

South East Regional Football Finals (English Schools Cup)
On 29th March we competed in the English School Cup South East England regional football finals. To get to this stage we initially won the Haringey cup – gaining the right to represent Haringey. At the District finals we managed to get to the final competing against representatives from Enfield and Harrow and other north London boroughs. In getting to the final we were now representing Middlesex and competing against districts from all over London and beyond! The winner of this competition would be representing SE England at the National Finals, played at a premier league stadium! Just being there was St Marys greatest football achievement! After many trains and buses we arrived and the competition was, as expected, extremely high with most teams having several academy players. We played incredibly well, going undefeated throughout the tournament without conceding a single goal! We missed a key penalty that would have sent us through to the final. I was so incredibly proud of the team as we showed we could compete with the best players in the country. We received match programmes, medals and a commemorative flag. This team have a very bright future and I have no doubt they’ll have more success!
