Y5 Visit The Science Museum – September 2024
On Tuesday we travelled to the Science Museum to support our science learning this half term about the Solar System. Year 5 had the opportunity to explore many galleries, one of which was the Space Gallery. From rockets to satellites, probes to landers, this gallery showcases some out-of-this world objects. Children were able see a full-sized replica of Eagle – the lander that took astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin to the Moon in 1969. They discovered how we are able to live in space – to breathe, eat, drink and go to the toilet. They got a unique insight into the history of rockets. They could see two real space rockets – a British Black Arrow and a United States Scout, suspended from the ceiling. They found out how the Space Age started in 1957 with the launch of Sputnik 1 and saw a full-size replica of the Huygens module that landed on Titan in 2005 and a model of the Beagle 2 Mars lander. We also visited the Wonderlab, the unmissable interactive experience, which ignited children’s curiosity, fuelled their imagination, and inspired them to see the world around them in new and exciting ways. They enjoyed live science shows and demonstrations from wonderful science Explainers, and revealed the beauty of the science and maths that shape our everyday lives.
