Celebrating 175 Years of St Mary’s CE Primary School in the Community
On Tuesday evening, the main hall at Rectory Gardens was transformed into an art gallery to showcase the amazing array of art that had been created by the children from Nursery to Year 6, using a huge variety of techniques. Each year group was given a section of time and asked to come up with images ranging from transport, the high street, to the Church Tower. There was even a recreation of Hornsey High Street from Rectory Gardens to Church Lane, created by the Reception Classes. In addition to the artwork, a huge archive of St Mary’s in previous years was displayed and a lot of fun was had, hunting for older sibling, parents and even grandparents. Both Mrs Molloy’s Church Lane Art Club and Ms Lincoln’s Rectory Gardens Art Club created work – pop-art portraits of David Greig by CL, and two giant church towers by Rectory Gardens.
In our digital age it’s hard to feel that we’re creating the same kind of archival material as the huge Daily Log, which spanned from 1900 to 1944, detailing the daily life of the school, including illnesses, weather and even the air raids that the school endured in 1944. A very moving piece of history.
We were delighted to have so many people come along to visit, from current pupils and parents to old friends of the school, former staff members and local councillors. Our prospective MP, Catherine West, also came along and was moved not only by the work but also by the wonderful choir who entertained with songs from different decades in history. The School Council also decorated cakes and biscuits which were sold, in exchange for a donation, to raise funds for future activities.
