23 Feb Sporting Events Spring 2 2024
Here are some highlights of the sport that has gone on during the second part of the Spring term.
Tennis Roadshow Comes to Church Lane
Highgate Tennis Club kindly offered us some free tennis sessions for our KS1 pupils as part of the ‘Tennis Road Show’. All children in KS1 got to take part and develop their tennis skills ahead of the summer. A fun afternoon for those involved!
Haringey Basketball Cup at APS School
Mr Oakley took a group of Y6 children who have been attending basketball club on Fridays to take part in the Haringey Basketball Cup. The children played brilliantly and quickly won 5 games, and drew 2 which put them through to the semi-finals. They won their semi-final and faced Rhodes Avenue in the final, which they narrowly lost but earned themselves a silver medal. Mr Oakley said he was so proud of the way the children played but also their behaviour. Taking part were: Armani, Junior, Alex T, Rico, Zane, Daniah-Lea and Debbie. A big thank you to Junior’s mum who has become a great fan!
Dance Event at Highgate School
Mr Oakley took a group of girls to a Dance Festival, hosted at Highgate School. Taking part were Sophie P, Maelyn, Riley, Ariyah, Sofia, Yanet, Ada, Wealthy, Naomi E and Krystle, a mixture of Year 3 and Year 5. They had different routines in the auditions but amalgamated them into one beautiful piece of dancing that received a rousing reception. Thank you very much to, to Ariyah’s mum for coming along to help. It was a lovely experience for everyone.
Cycling Event @ Ducketts Common
Mr Allison took a group of children to Ducketts Common on Friday 15th March for a cycling event (which thankfully wasn’t rained off!). The children did well, with some first, second and third places and we look forward to seeing the League results when they are in. Taking part were Zaiah, Bejan, Triston, Godsend, Godwin, Isabelle, Olivia, Elena, Amina and Deborah.
Inclusive Swimming Gala at the Olympic Pool
Mr Oakley plus Ms Vidic, Ms Dalila, Ms Pilosi took eight lucky children to the Olympic swimming pool in Stratford to take part in an inclusive swimming gala. As well as competing in lots of different types of events the children were lucky enough to watch the Team GB Diving team practicing in the Diving Pool next door as they prepare for the Olympics in Paris this summer. What a treat!
Boccia Final – St Mary’s representing Haringey
Ms Vidic and Ms Clarke took our team along to the Copper Box Statium in the Olympic Park to represent Haringey in the Boccia Finals. Boccia is a little like boules and petanque. The children performed really well against some very stiff competition from across London and had a great day out. What an experience!
Taking part were: Naomi T, Leo, Haidar, Alex M and Valentina
Sit Down Volleyball
In this version of volleyball, competitors must sit on the floor to play. Which must be incredibly difficult! Taking part were Leo, Eddie and Krystle (Y5 Turquoise), Roni (Y6 Amethyst), Chibu & Valentina (Y6 Indigo). Thank you to Mr Allison and Ms Pilosi for taking the children along.
Cycling – Roller Racing at Rectory Gardens
On 23rd Feb we hosted the Haringey Cycling League Indoor Roller Racing event. Schools compete against each other on cycling machines and can then see on the big screen their speed & distance and can watch the race unfold live! It was great fun with lots of cheering in the hall as we were the home team! Ada and Godsend had two huge comeback wins that blew the roof off! A brilliant event that took us to 2nd in the Haringey Cycling League. Year 3 children got to have a go as well as a treat!
Cycling Team: Murilo, Bejan, Adrian, Triston, Godsend, Isabelle, Ada, Tess, Na’rae & Deborah
