Spring 1 Sporting Round-Up – January 2023
Indoor Roller Racing
On January 12th we hosted the indoor roller racing event in the Haringey Cycling League. Children compete on static bicycles and their distance & speed is linked to a virtual race display on the big screen! Eight schools took part and it was a fantastic event. Ada got us off to a flying start, winning her first race, and Tyler recorded the quickest lap of the day! It’s super tight in the league and we’re excited for the next round in February. Well done all!
Cyclists: Tyler, Dominic, Sha’heed, Triston J, Fefe, Amelia Skinner, Zahara, Lottie, Na’rae, Ada
Gymnastics Season! Floor Routines
It’s gymnastics season and the children have been putting together floor routines and body management routines. These involve balances, jumps, travelling steps and various roll with a focus on stillness, straightness and fluency. I’ve been so impressed with the focus and enthusiasm as well as the talent! As well as gymnastics clubs at both sites we’ll be hosting trials soon for the Haringey gymnastics competitions.
Inclusive Boccia Competition
On January 17th we went to New River for the Inclusive Boccia Competition. Boccia is a sport similar to French boules and lawn bowls. The children worked brilliantly and showed their impressive Boccia skills that we had developed in our Monday sessions with Alex and Naomi T leading the way with their accuracy. We ended up with silver medals, finishing in overall 2nd place! Well done all!
Boccia Team: Alex, Prince, Senay, Suraht, Eddie (Y4), Leo, Naomi T, Haidar, Valentina
Regional Football Cup!
After winning the Haringey Football Cup in September we qualified to represent Haringey at the Regional (county) Pokémon Football Cup. We travelled a long way to The Hive, Barnet football club’s stadium! Up against winners of other boroughs (Enfield, Hounslow, Barnet etc), this cup was to decide the best primary school in all of North London! We performed at an amazing level with captain Dieumerci leading brilliantly. We drew our first two games and then won the following games 2-0 and 2-1 beating the Enfield and Hounslow champions respectively. We managed to get all the way to the final where we narrowly lost to a very good team (Alma School – Barnet Winners). However, we may still qualify for the next round as finalists! Regional finalists is a special achievement and the boys should be extremely proud of themselves! We also got to spend some time with a professional football player from Barnet FC, Daniel Powell. I know this group of players will go on to play at an extremely high standard and hopefully keep enjoying their football!
Year 5-6 Football Team: Lionel, Fefe, Adanis, Joseph, Reuben, Dieumerci, Isaac, Abu, Dominic
Indoor Athletics Qualifiers
On January 19th we went to the Indoor Haringey Athletics qualifiers. There are 3 separate events with 8 schools at each event (24 in total). The top two schools from each heat qualify for the indoor athletics finals. We have a strong group this year so I knew we’d do quite well but they exceeded my expectations! Misha (athletics captain) won 4 golds in sprints, relay, high jump and ball throw! Karis and Abu were also stand-out performers winning several individual golds. In the track events the boys dominated winning gold in 5 separate races. Of the 8 schools there we finished 2nd, just missing out on 1st place to Harris Academy. We therefore qualified for the finals where the top 6 schools will meet. The talent, effort, teamwork and sportsmanship on show was absolutely fantastic. The children were a credit to the school!
Athletics team: Joseph, Fefe, Tyler, Dieumerci, Julian, Reuben, Abu, Adanis, Josiah, Jean, Misha, Karis, Lottie, Ffion, Zahara, Waverley, Destiny, Khloe, Berdil
Indoor Athletics Finals!
St Marys achieve Bronze in Athletics Finals!
After qualifying last week, we competed this week in the Indoor Athletics Haringey Finals. This was the top 6 schools in the borough so the competition level was high. We had some fantastic results with individual golds and Silvers in high jump (Adanis), Ball throw (Dieumerci), Triple and long jump and sprints (Abu, Karis, Khloe, Tyler, Adanis, Fefe), just to name a few! After some tense races the results came in and we finished 3rd, picking up bronze medals! It’s been a pleasure working with these talented students the last two weeks as they’ve pushed themselves, improved their PB’s and encouraged and supported each other throughout. Well done to the Athletics Team!
Competing were: Fefe, Tyler, Dieumerci, Julian, Reuben, Abu, Adanis, Josiah, Dominic, Jean, Misha, Karis, Lottie, Ffion, Zahara, Waverley, Destiny, Khloe, Berdil
Gymnastics Season! Apparatus
After completing our floor gymnastics, we have been using the varied apparatus to challenge the children in gymnastics. The children have been learning different jumps (star, tuck right through to straddle and full turns), using the vaulting box, springboard and trampete. The focus is landing with control and showing straightness/technique in the air. We have also been balancing, climbing and swinging from the ropes as well as using the climbing frames, ropes and benches. This is always a popular lesson and great fun!
